The holiday season is all about taking a break from the busy routine of work, connecting with family, and, for many, recalibrating their goals and aims in anticipation of a new year. If you run a small law firm, this likely means trying (again) to figure out how you...
If You Want Better Employee Retention, then You Need a Top-Tier Onboarding Program
Onboarding programs are getting a lot of hype these days, and for good reason. In today’s job market, top talent can afford to be picky—which means, if your firm doesn’t make a good first impression, your shiny new hire won’t be sticking around for too long. What’s...
Delegate or Die: How to Delegate Important Tasks with Confidence
“Delegate or die” might sound hyperbolic, but in the legal field today, it’s all too accurate—at least where your professional life is concerned. Countless attorneys are drowning in work, and their failure to meet unrealistic demands is sinking their careers. The...
Training Intrapreneurship at Your Law Firm: Creating a Law Firm Culture of Ownership & Leadership
Entrepreneurship is all about going out and getting. The term was coined by French economist Jean-Baptiste Say and refers to the impulse to undertake or cut your own path. You, the person who took the risk of starting a small law firm, are an entrepreneur. What your firm needs, on the other hand, are intrapreneurs—employees filled with entrepreneurial spirit but a “we’re in this together” mindset.
5 Mistakes That Put a Stop to Law Firm Growth
Nothing has the ability to grab a business owner’s attention more than money—or, more specifically, the lack of. When law firm growth slows down at the same time expenses begin to rise, the first thing attorneys do is wonder how they got there. Then they’ll start...
Small Fixes—Big Impact
I’ve worked with thousands of attorneys in my career and nearly without exception, all have said that the hardest part about running a law firm is retaining an engaged team. Weird? Well, not really when you consider that lawyers are trained to practice law, not...

Creating Job Opportunities That People Will Be Fighting Over (Instead of Running Away From)
There are 600,000 more open jobs available today than there were at the end of 2021. That’s right: 11.5 million jobs are just waiting to be filled right now, compared to 10.9 million at the end of the 2021, and 6.7 million at the end of 2019—our last “normal” year....
3 Tips to Find the Motivation to Further Your Business Success
You don’t become an attorney without a healthy dose of ambition, which is why so many in the profession suffer when they hit their mid-career slump. You studied, stressed, and ultimately survived law school. You passed the bar, waded into the sharky waters of the job market, built a career, and had the moxie to start your own firm. It wasn’t always fun, but it gave you purpose. Now you’re here, in calmer seas… What’s next?
The Value of Transparency with Your Client Services Coordinator
There are two types of attorneys: those that spend their day worrying about what their admin team is (or isn’t) doing and those that spend their day micromanaging their admins to relieve this worry. Neither is good—not for you, not for your firm, and not for your ability to retain talented employees—and yet it’s easy to feel as if there’s no alternative. This article exists to tell you that there is but to see it, you need to learn the value of transparency.
The Significance of Taking Your Vacation Time, and How to Do So Stress-Free
When you started law school you knew it was going to be busy, stressful, and hard but if someone had told you then that ten, fifteen, or twenty years on you’d be struggling to carve out vacation time and have no margin for self-care, you might not have signed up. Furthermore, if they’d told you that every day would be a grind, retaining quality employees would feel impossible, and even finding slivers of joy in your routine would feel out of reach, you would have fled. So how did you get here? Or perhaps, more importantly, how do you change?
