Law firm growth strategies are essential for firms looking to improve efficiency, empower teams, and increase revenue. Yet, many attorneys resist change, often responding with: That’s not how we do it at this law firm.
Why Law Firms Must Adapt to Grow
As legal consultants, we work with law firms that recognize the need for improvement. However, resistance to change is common. Just last week, after our Team Empowerment Academy Masterclass, a Client Relations Coordinator (CRC) in the program reached out to me.
“Molly, you mentioned how other firms have their CRC step in at the end of client meetings to finalize engagement agreements and schedule future appointments. When I proposed this to my attorney, he said, ‘That’s not how we do it here.’ I don’t know how to change his mind. Can you help? We barely made payroll last week, and I just heard him tell a prospective client to go home and think about it before deciding!”
“I know it’s not my job to worry about money, but I am!”
The Cost of Sticking to Outdated Processes
If your current process was truly working, you wouldn’t have reached out to us in the first place. And your attorney certainly wouldn’t be investing in this program!
My response was simple: Yes, it is your job to be aware of—but not worry about—money, clients, and processes. Especially if you want to benefit from the incentive-based compensation model we set up for your firm this year.
Timing and approach matter. Introducing a new process idea between back-to-back meetings—when your attorney is already running late and rushing out the door—may not be the best moment. Their immediate rejection isn’t a firm no; they just weren’t in the right mindset to consider it. Let’s discuss how to present these law firm growth strategies effectively.
Encouraging Law Firm Growth Strategies
Here’s my message to attorneys: When your team suggests process improvements, instead of dismissing them, say:
“I appreciate your enthusiasm and your investment in our firm’s growth. Can you add this topic to our weekly stakeholders’ meeting agenda on [X-date] and prepare a written proposal for discussion? I’m a visual learner and would love to see the details.”
When employees hear “That’s not how we do it,” they actually hear “I’m the boss; your ideas don’t matter.” This discourages initiative and innovation. But for your firm to thrive, you need team members who take ownership and propose solutions. Given the opportunity, they will make excellent decisions that drive your firm forward.
If employees feel their suggestions are dismissed without consideration, they will stop taking initiative—and that’s the last thing you want!
Implementing Law Firm Growth Strategies for Success
If your firm struggles with outdated processes, here are some strategies to drive success:
- Encourage Team Involvement – Empower your team to propose new solutions and refine existing workflows.
- Hold Regular Meetings – Establish weekly stakeholder meetings to review new ideas and implement changes effectively.
- Improve Client Retention – Streamline client interactions, making engagement more seamless and efficient.
- Optimize Financial Strategies – Implement structured compensation models that align team efforts with firm success.
