An unapologetic leadership mindset is essential for professional and personal success. Being a leader is one of the loneliest roles. And if you’re a solo business owner, you may feel stranded on a desert island, teetering on the edge of insanity. I once read an article titled, “If you haven’t hurt someone’s feelings by noon, you are not leading.” That statement was a relief—finally, someone else understood the weight of leadership. Leaders are often labeled as too harsh, too intense, and if you’re a woman, you’re called emotional, difficult, or even impossible to please.
This isn’t just a millennial mindset—it’s an employee mindset. But before employees get defensive, hear me out.
Why an Unapologetic Leadership Mindset Matters
Anyone who knows me knows I stand firmly for employees. My mission is to empower employees worldwide to discover their capabilities, face their fears, and shift their mindset to become intrapreneurs who achieve their professional and personal goals—often despite themselves.
Leaders must be upfront and out front. However, the perception that “nothing is ever good enough” for the boss is an excuse. If you default to this mindset when receiving feedback or coaching, you’re selling yourself short—not just at work, but in every aspect of life.
Applying the Unapologetic Leadership Mindset in the Workplace
To illustrate this, let’s look at fitness—an area where brutal honesty is not only accepted but expected. I recently joined a 10-week body transformation boot camp. On day four, at 5 a.m., the instructor pushed us hard, saying:
“If you think what you’re giving is ‘good enough,’ you might as well leave. You wrote me a check because you’re tired of not having what you want in life. If you tell yourself you’re doing your best, you’ve already quit. Shift your mindset to ‘It is never good enough.’ Growth requires constant improvement.”
Yet, in the workplace, leaders are often criticized for pushing employees to grow. Why is it unacceptable for a boss to say, “Let’s improve your phone etiquette, avoid typos, refine your professional attire, or take this project to the next level”? This is the very coaching that fosters success.
How to Embrace a Bold Leadership Mindset for Success
Employees, I encourage you to make a 2-millimeter mindset shift. View your boss as your fitness coach—the person who helps you develop the skills to earn a raise, take Fridays off in the summer, or step into a leadership role. Instead of resisting feedback, embrace it. Approach your boss with confidence and say, “I want to grow. I am coachable—will you mentor me?”
Sugarcoating doesn’t work. The hard truth at 5 a.m. drives results. In my boot camp, 40 people started the challenge; statistics suggest fewer than half will finish. The same applies to professional growth—those who embrace an unapologetic leadership mindset will reach their goals, while others will stay stagnant.
