Hiring is a crucial yet often challenging task, especially when you’re looking for someone to work closely with you. Many business owners struggle with the effective hiring process, often influenced by past experiences. This mindset—sometimes called “being realistic”—can lead to missed opportunities.
Understanding the Effective Hiring Process
This realization hit home during a recent visit to East Austin, where I help support a local housing project. My friend brought her 7-year-old son to join me in delivering clothes, school supplies, and meals to children in the area.
As usual, the kids were thrilled to see us. They were playing outside unsupervised, laughing, running, and tussling over food and toys.
On the way home, my friend used the moment to teach her son a lesson about gratitude: “We’re lucky to have a nice home and plenty of things. Not everyone has that.”
Her son, however, saw it differently: “I think where they live is AWESOME!”
Intrigued, I asked what he found awesome about it. He excitedly replied, “They get to play outside with their friends, and no parents are watching them!”
Of course, a 7-year-old doesn’t fully understand the struggles these kids face—poor nutrition, lack of educational support, and uncertain futures. Yet, his fresh perspective reminded us that even in difficult circumstances, there’s value to be found.
Why the Effective Hiring Process Matters
When hiring, business owners often focus on immediate returns, like how quickly a candidate can start or how much time they’ll save. These are valid concerns, especially with the pressures of payroll and production.
But focusing exclusively on ROI can cause you to overlook critical traits—both good and bad. For instance, I once worked with a boss who thought he found the perfect assistant. The candidate was sharp and efficient, but the team warned that her personality clashed with his preferences. Ignoring these insights could have led to friction down the line.
This example highlights the importance of blending perspectives. Business owners and team members both bring unique insights, and combining them creates a clear, holistic picture of each candidate.
