Your path and progress can often feel slow compared to others. We’ve all been there—working tirelessly toward a goal only to see someone else breeze past, seemingly effortless. Maybe you’ve celebrated achieving a three-month revenue goal, only to hear a colleague casually mention hitting numbers three times yours. Perhaps you’ve painstakingly hired and trained assistants, only to see others running teams of 10 with ease.

I had a similar moment recently while hiking in Austin (a must-do if you live here). As I reached the top of a grueling stretch of stone steps, a jogger ran past me effortlessly. At first, I felt deflated. Then, I realized something powerful: everyone on the trail was at a different place in their journey.

Your Progress is Yours

That jogger may have spent years building his fitness, while I was new to hiking. Similarly, others on the trail might have struggled in areas where I excel. Their stories don’t diminish mine—just as your team’s journey and achievements shouldn’t be measured against others.

When we compare ourselves to others, we often make assumptions about their journey. But what does their progress have to do with ours? Nothing, except perhaps as inspiration or a chance to learn.

Learn Without Copying

In business, I see this comparison trap often. Leaders ask, How do I get my team to operate like theirs? or What’s their secret to success? While there’s value in learning from others, your journey and your team’s progress are unique.

One client of mine, for instance, was offered a partnership with a company that wanted to build an empire. While that worked for them, my client’s vision was different. She wanted a smaller, more intimate business that served fewer clients exceptionally well. By honoring her unique goals, she avoided a partnership that would have drained her resources and energy.

Focus on Your Team’s Journey

Instead of mimicking others, ask yourself: Why am I on this path? and What does my team need to thrive? Your progress might look different, but it should align with your goals, strengths, and values.

Your journey is yours to define. Learn from others, but don’t lose sight of what makes your path unique. For more insights, check out our free resources and weekly blogs at fire.h50.us/~hrgnmpwr/dev2/.
