Last week, I had a call with a small business owner who contacted me after reading one of our blog posts on Twitter. This conversation highlighted a common issue many small-business owners face: the challenges of effective small-business management, particularly when it comes to balancing team, time, and money.
When I asked about his practice’s structure, he explained, “I used to have six staff members, but I didn’t want the overhead, so now it’s just me. It’s much, much easier.”
Small-Business Management Challenges
I asked, “How many hours a week are you working?”
“Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. And at least one day on the weekend, but not both,” he replied.
“So, roughly 65+ hours? And on the weekend day, you don’t work; you’re not taking work home, right?” Silence followed.
Improving Finances in Small-Business Management
Our discussion shifted to finances, both gross and net. I guided him through a quick time-and-money exercise, leading to some significant “aha” moments. We covered:
- Moving from owning a job to owning a business, inspired by Robert Kiyosaki’s principles.
- How to attract and retain a dream team to support business growth.
- Focusing only on top revenue-generating tasks you, the business owner, can perform.
Why Intrapreneurs Are Key in Small-Business Management
We explored hiring, training, empowering, and firing processes in depth. I also explained the benefits of intrapreneurs over traditional employees. Intrapreneurs are self-motivated and innovative, making them indispensable for scaling a business effectively.
This topic had been the focus of a 90-minute presentation I recently delivered to a national organisation. His reaction? He was blown away. It was a conversation worth recording.
Take Charge of Your Small-Business Management
After the call, it struck me how many small-business owners are in the same boat—working tirelessly, trying to juggle everything alone or with subpar staff.
