Setting the tone for a better interview process is critical to attracting and keeping top talent. Interviews should foster trust, authenticity, and genuine conversation to ensure candidates feel excited about their new roles.

Too often, poor interview strategies can leave promising candidates second-guessing their decision to join a company. A recent experience involving my goddaughter highlights the consequences of such missteps.

She was thrilled about transitioning from her local store to a corporate role aligned with her strengths. However, what should have been an exciting step became an unsettling experience. Instead of the expected one-on-one meeting with a regional manager, she faced an intimidating panel of six interviewers. The tone was aggressive, with repetitive “gotcha” questions and assumptions she had to correct constantly.

Though she performed well enough to receive a job offer, her enthusiasm became uneasy. Starting a new position feeling wary of management undermines an employee’s potential to thrive. Companies must prioritise a better interview process that instils confidence rather than doubt if they want to attract the best talent.

Avoid Tricks in Your Better Interview Process

Many hiring managers proudly describe the “trick” questions they use during interviews to catch candidates off guard. However, this approach often backfires. A better interview process eliminates unnecessary games and focuses on building a foundation of trust and mutual respect.

Instead of trying to trip candidates up, aim to understand their goals, strengths, and potential fit within the team. Open-ended conversations are far more effective than combativeness in revealing authenticity.

Focus on Connection in Your Better Interview Process

An exceptional interview should feel like the beginning of a collaborative relationship. Great employees want to feel connected to a company’s mission, confident in their leadership, and excited about contributing to its success. A better interview process fosters these connections by encouraging genuine dialogue and avoiding adversarial tactics.

When hiring managers create a welcoming and transparent atmosphere, candidates are likelier to share their true selves. This helps determine if they’re a good fit and sets the stage for a successful working relationship.

How to Start Your Interview Process

No magic question guarantees a perfect hire. However, it is key to focus on authenticity and getting candidates comfortable enough to share their genuine thoughts. Discrepancies in their experience or story will naturally emerge during open discussions.
