Last week, I fully unplugged and attended an eight-day retreat at the Hoffman Institute in Northern California, where I discovered powerful insights about team leadership strategies and personal growth. This transformative experience focused on reflection, connection, and growth—completely free from technology or outside communication. My coach Paula had recommended the Hoffman Process eight years ago, but I dismissed it, claiming I was “too busy” and “too overwhelmed.”
Recently, during breakfast with my uncle—a highly successful entrepreneur with a balanced, authentic life—I learned he and my aunt had completed the process years ago. That conversation was the push I needed. As they say, “The teacher appears when the student is ready.”
Why Team Leadership Strategies Begin With Self-Discovery
The retreat brought together 40 participants from around the world—Brazil, Singapore, Canada, Texas—all connected by a shared journey of growth. From the start, I appreciated the rules: no talk of work or titles, which freed us from judgment. We became simply humans, striving for connection and understanding.
The week was intense and humbling, but one moment stands out: a powerful allegory shared on our final day. It perfectly captured what authentic team leadership strategies should look like.
Lessons from Geese: Building Stronger Teams
Here’s the essence of the allegory:
- Flying Together in Formation: Geese in a “V” formation support each other. Their combined effort increases efficiency by 71%. Similarly, aligned teams achieve more when working together toward shared goals.
- Taking Turns Leading: The lead goose rotates when tired, allowing others to step forward. Effective leaders delegate and empower their team.
- Encouraging from Behind: Geese honk to motivate those ahead. Great leaders inspire and uplift.
- Supporting the Weakest Members: When one goose falls out of formation, two others stay with it, offering protection and care. Strong teams support every member, even in challenging times.
This story moved everyone in the room to tears. It beautifully illustrates how community, direction, and shared leadership create strength and resilience.
How to Apply Team Leadership Strategies in Your Business
As I reenter daily life, I’m committed to these principles. Teams thrive when leaders embrace collaboration, empowerment, and support—just like geese in formation. Ask yourself:
- Are your messages to your team encouraging and uplifting?
- Does your team operate like a unified flock or feel disjointed and overwhelmed?
If you’re ready to lead with purpose and empower your team, consider flying in formation with us.
