Simple life lessons can bring clarity and ease to our work lives. Despite all the learning, coaching, and insights we gain, we often need help with overanalysis. Watching my 1-year-old son, Maximus, approach life with simplicity reminded me that sometimes the best lessons come from a child’s perspective. Here’s what we can learn from how children handle challenges and how these lessons can transform our workplaces.
Six Simple Life Lessons to Try in the Workplace
1. Express Your Needs Clearly
Babies never hold back when they need something; they immediately let you know. Whether they’re hungry, tired, or uncomfortable, they make their needs known immediately. As adults, we often hesitate to express our needs, unsure if we have the right or waiting for someone to notice. But keeping your needs to yourself usually leads to frustration. So, I would like to speak up. You’ll find that people are more than willing to help you.
2. Keep It Simple and Act
When Maximus wants to play, he picks up a toy and plays. If he’s done, he moves on without second-guessing himself. Adults often overthink and dwell on decisions. For example, if an employee is late, don’t over-plan how to address it or revise policies; talk to them directly. A simple, straightforward approach often resolves minor issues quickly.
3. Start Each Day with Excitement
Every morning, my son wakes up with a smile, eager to explore the day. Imagine bringing that energy to work! Even routine tasks feel different with a positive mindset. Starting the day enthusiastically sets a positive tone and creates a vibrant workplace atmosphere.
4. Approach New Experiences as Adventures
To Maximus, every new toy, food, or activity is an exciting adventure. Bringing this sense of curiosity and openness to work can be refreshing. Try seeing each new project as an opportunity to grow, even if it is unfamiliar. An adventurous mindset opens doors to new ideas and makes work feel more rewarding.
5. Meet Your Basic Needs First
A child eats when hungry and rests when tired. It’s as simple as that. Yet, adults often ignore these basic needs. To perform your best, please make sure to prioritize your basic needs. Take breaks, stay nourished, and make time for rest. A well-rested, well-nourished person brings more focus and energy, benefiting everyone.
6. Give Things a Second Chance
One day, Maximus may dislike a new food; a few days later, he tries it again and loves it. We often dismiss ideas or methods that don’t work immediately. Instead, consider revisiting them later. Sometimes, ideas need time to resonate. A second chance can reveal new solutions.
Applying simple life lessons to our work life won’t solve every problem, but it can make challenges more manageable. Embrace simplicity, be present, and tackle issues directly. Try starting the day excitedly, expressing your needs clearly, and finding joy in each task tomorrow. Remove unnecessary complexity and rediscover the value of being in the moment.
