Have you ever noticed how, when you hit your lowest point, that is when you finally reach out to strengthen your business and improve yourself? It’s when you decide to start working out, meditating, or even go to therapy. You might sign up for groups at church or buy self-help books (though you probably never finish them). Or, from a business perspective, you wait until you can no longer tolerate your employee’s (or boss’s) disrespect and stress, so you fire them (or quit) without a plan for what’s next. This often leads to more stress and sets you up for failure.

What if, instead, during your strongest moments, you proactively begin to improve yourself? By planning ahead, like ants preparing for winter, you can strengthen your body, mind, and skills, and fill your toolbox with resources that help you during tough times.

How to Strengthen Your Business and Build Resilience
I recall when the economy took a sudden downturn in 2008, forcing our company to lay off half of our staff. It was heartbreaking and scary. While we didn’t anticipate such a shift, it prompted us to have an honest conversation: we had become complacent. We hadn’t been marketing as effectively as we should have because business was coming in organically. We allowed unproductive habits and employees to remain in place because we were doing well. However, when the economy shifted, we realized we could have better weathered the storm if we had been proactive, continuously improving and running the business in a healthier way.

Strengthening Your Business in Strong Moments for Future Growth
I also remember going through a tough divorce. Some days were empowering, but others left me barely holding on. I learned that pulling myself up by my bootstraps during my low days wasn’t effective. On tough days, all I could do was stay the course, avoiding decisions that might make things worse. However, on my stronger days, I focused on practices that strengthened me—meditation, exercise, eating well, and absorbing inspirational content. These habits helped me build resilience, reducing the frequency and duration of the tough days. Over time, I had a reserve of strength to pull from when I needed it most.
